DataTrak, a Cleveland, Ohio provider of electronic data capture (EDC) technology, reported improving quarterly financial results. Revenue rose 11 percent to $2.4 million. The net loss narrowed to $1.6 million from more than twice that amount. But the company has a limited amount of cash on hand. “Our third quarter results are an encouraging improvement and they are starting to show the company’s return to sound business fundamentals,” said Jeff Green, CEO. Biovail Corporation announced quarterly financial results. Revenues were $181.1 million, compared with $188.9 million a year before. “We made solid progress on the implementation of our new strategic focus and in restructuring our business in the third quarter,” said Biovail CEO Bill Wells.

Applied Biosystems and Asuragen are collaborating with the Critical Path Institute’s Predictive Safety Testing Consortium to develop a predictive gene signature panel that will allow pharmaceutical companies to quickly and easily screen potential therapeutics for toxic effects in pre-clinical samples. “The development of robust turnkey assays to speed development of therapeutics for patients is one of the fundamental goals of the Critical Path Initiative, for which we believe we can make a difference working with partners such as Applied Biosystems and Asuragen,” said William Mattes, director of C-Path’s Predictive Safety Testing Consortium. “We expect this collaboration will facilitate broader utility of genomic biomarkers of toxicity across the industry in order to enable the early prediction and mechanistic understanding of potential carcinogens in pre-clinical research.” Here’s the release.

Craig Miller will cover the North East region, Andrew Nehls will focus on the South East region and Nancy Angus will serve clients in the West Coast region. Parexel’s California Clinical Trials division pioneered the ethnobridging study, a pharmacokinetic study designed to determine safety and tolerability as well as possible pharmacokinetic differences in an ethnic population. Phase I clinical data that are gathered in the U.S. can be used for subsequent global trials that include China, or for Chinese registration. “To meet increasing client demand for global development programs that include the Asia/Pacific region, we are expanding our ethnobridging study capabilities to expedite early phase approval of compounds in Asia and the Western hemisphere,” said Michelle Middle, corporate VP and worldwide head of clinical pharmacology at Parexel.
