LCG Bioscience and the Harley Street Clinic are joining forces to provide sponsors with access to London clinical trials expertise, a diverse range of patient populations, major teaching hospital specialists and intensive care facilities outside the constraints of a National Health Service environment. LCG medical director Anthony Priestley says: “LCG Bioscience will work collectively with the Harley Street Clinic to facilitate first-in human studies with the provision of dedicated ITU facilities. The central London location provides access to a large pool of healthy volunteers and patient groups.”

Baird Capital Partners Asia (BCPA), the Greater China-focused investment group of Baird Private Equity, announced that it has completed its first investment, providing $10 million of growth equity capital along with other investors to Frontage Laboratories. Frontage is a U.S./China contract research organization that provides research services. The Company has facilities in Pennsylvania (Malvern and Exton) and in China (Shanghai). MPI Research has entered into negotiations with the city of Kalamazoo to take over two downtown buildings vacated by Pfizer as part of its overall multi-phased expansion initiative. Pfizer announced that it is donating these structures to the city. The state of Michigan is providing an incentive package.

Diversity Alliance for Science has organized a two-day event scheduled for May 19-20 at the Westin Governor hotel in Morristown, N.J.  Vanessa Hill, development director for the Institute of Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina, will serve as the chair. The event will provide pharmaceutical, bio-tech, clinical research organizations (CROs) and governmental agencies interested in maintaining diversity in the workplace. Bayer HealthCare announced the launch of EZ-Log Web Client, a new online tool that allows hemophilia patients and health care providers to record and track treatment on the EZ-Log Web site. “With EZ-Log’s Web Client application, our clinic can use one program to manage treatment and monitor compliance for all our hemophilia patients, regardless of their treatment needs,” said Katie Westover, patient services coordinator, Milwaukee Comprehensive Center For Bleeding Disorders. Life Biosystems announced that it has been chosen by the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center to provide strategic information technology consulting services for a number of key areas. In the initial project, the company will work closely with the executive management team of M.D. Anderson to help design, plan and organize the replacement of the existing clinical trial protocol data management system (PDMS) with an updated comprehensive protocol management solution.

Phase Forward reported quarterly financial results. Revenue rose to $38 million from $30.1 million—a 27 percent rise. The company profits were 9 cents per share, down slightly compared with 10 cents a year ago. But the firm said revenues from contract research organizations grew 55 percent over 2007 and are now 19 percent of total revenues. One Wall Street analyst, Friedman, Billings Ramsey’s James Krumpel, commented: “The company clearly is riding a wave of adoption of its electronic data capture offerings, while leading competitors seem disadvantaged in both function and scalability,” he said in a note to investors.” Here’s the company’s release.
