The troubled Paraxel-TeGenero clinical trial in London had some good news yesterday. Two patients hospitalized after taking a Phase I leukemia drug have been sent home. There are four other patients still hospitalized. One is in critical condition. The story is being ignored in U.S. media. In England, there are two issues: payments to patients and ads that attracted the patients to the trial. London’s Financial Times says that voluntary guidelines of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry prohibit widespread marketing of a clinical trial. The association also bans payments to patients outright. The controversy illustrates the limitations of any voluntary guidelines. German and British police continue to say that criminal investigations are possible.
