Commonwealth Biotechnologies (CBI) announced a strategic alliance with New Zealand Pharmaceuticals (NZP) to provide small molecules. The alliance will focus on providing glycotherapeutic products and services for research through to process scale-up and commercialization.

eResearchTechnology (eRT) and nSpire Health announced their alliance to jointly provide integrated cardiac safety and pulmonary core lab services. eRT and nSpire will deliver a combined solution to meet the increased demand for cardio-pulmonary safety and efficacy services during clinical trials, in part caused by an increased interest in using inhaled therapeutics.
Holmes Biopharma recently signed a $1.2 million contract with an unidentified East Asian pharmaceutical company. This contract will generate a substantial Phase I clinical trial revenue for the Omaha operation. The contract will be a significant revenue source for Holmes Biopharma’s data management group in Toronto, Canada. Here is the news release.

The American Society for Clinical Investigation presented the 2008 Stanley Korsmeyer award to Gerald I. Shulman, M.D., professor of internal medicine and cellular and molecular physiology at the Yale School of Medicine for his contributions to the understanding of Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. The FDA will be working with the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard, and University of North Carolina on a safety database with information about 35 million patients. Those patients are covered by the Wellpoint insurance company, which owns many statewide Blue Cross systems. The Wellpoint safety effort will be run by a division called Health Core. “The FDA is planning a larger public-private partnership and we’re excited that WellPoint is building a system that could inform this initiative,” said FDA-CDER head Janet Woodcock in a Wellpoint press release. Wellpoint’s approach has apparently been inspired by a rival, United Health Group, which has long sold patient data about 39 million people to the pharmaceutical industry through its i3 Aperio division.
